About the Webinar

From the principal down to maintenance staff, a big challenge for schools is keeping across changes to employment law and complying with complex regulatory requirements. This session will look at some recent developments in employment law which have the impact on employment policies and practices, and what schools need to do to ensure compliance, including:

  • Recent cases on the right of casual employees to be back-paid leave entitlements in specified circumstances
  • The ability to terminate staff for speaking out critically - James Cook University v Ridd [2020] FCAFC 123
  • When it may be illegal to use fixed-term contracts and not renew them at the end of the term
  • The growing problem of “wage theft” and increasing government focus - what does the school need to do?
  • National whistle-blower laws which protect employees - is a policy mandatory for your school, and if not, should you have one anyway?
  • Developments in portability of long-service leave
  • The decision of the High Court in Mondelez on entitlement to personal and carers leave
  • Changes to employment law resulting from Covid-19 - where to from here?
