About the Webinar

The acceptable standards for student discipline have changed over several generations. What can schools legally and reasonably do to maintain some control over student behaviour and protect the school community in the face of serious instances of misconduct? This session will examine the issues for schools in behaviour management and provide a guide to managing discipline in a legally compliant manner, including:

  • What needs to be in your school discipline policy? What types of conduct need to be covered? Should both conduct inside and outside the school be included?
  • Considerations of duty of care and WHS to the student, teachers, other students and the wider school community
  • How should investigations be conducted and who should do it?
  • What is procedural fairness and how to embed it in investigation processes?
  • Managing privacy and confidentiality issues
  • Managing process and outcomes including communications and media interest
  • Legislative and regulatory obligations including child protection standards and reporting obligations
  • Using the enrolment contract to manage behaviour and discipline
  • Case examples
