Charities and NFPs collect and hold a significant amount of personal information, some of which is very sensitive. The legislative requirements for the collection and disclosure of personal information are complex, and the obligations organisations have to keep information secure are increasingly onerous. This session provides an overview of the legal and practical issues in the management of personal information, including:

  • The data protection obligations in the Privacy Act and how they apply to charities and NFPs
  • What personal information can be requested and when?
  •  How should personal information be stored?
  • What should be in your data breach policy and immediate steps to take following a breach
  • Crisis management and communication strategies in the event of a breach
  • Consequences of data breaches - not just financial
  • Board duties and liability for information management and security

Veronica is a Partner in KPMG Law and has joined KPMG from a top tier Australian law firm where she was special counsel in its insurance, media & corporate risk team and lead its national privacy team. She is admitted as a solicitor in both Australia and England & Wales.

Veronica is highly experienced in advising government and private sector clients on complex and sensitive legal issues and risks relating to privacy, data, digital content and technology, media & communications laws.

She provides pragmatic and commercial risk based legal advice to help clients to protect their data, innovate and respond to and manage data breaches. Her work include use of surveillance devices and drones, big data projects, the application of GDPR, credit reporting, marketing campaigns, research projects and clinical trials, managing social media risks and cross border data flows.

Veronica is Treasurer of the Melbourne Press Club and a member of the Australian Law Council’s Privacy and Media & Communications Committees.
