At the heart of conveyancing practice lies the contract for the sale and purchase of land. Understanding which standard form to use for the transaction, and how to tweak it to address the issues at hand can be confusing to those new to practice. As with all standard forms and templates, the extent to which they can be used properly in any transaction depends on the skills and knowledge of the practitioner preparing or reviewing it. To assist conveyancers develop their skills and knowledge, this session will:

• Explain the options for standard forms contracts and the differences between them;
• Guide you through the structure and substance of the standard form contracts;
• Discuss how the standard form contracts can be adapted to suit the transaction at hand (including examples of wording for special conditions)
• Examine practical issues which can arise and how such issues were managed in practice;
• Provide an update on how these issues have been dealt with case law and how those issues are managed in practice; and
• Flag what is on the horizon in terms of changes and new editions of the contract.
